Fire agate is a microcrystalline variety of the quartz group, a type of chalcedony. There are many types of agate, its color depends on the different materials it may contain. The most abundant are gray, although they are also found in yellow, orange, white, blue and brown. Fire agate owes its color and iridescence to the reddish and brownish hematite inclusions it contains. In its natural state it usually forms inside cavities of volcanic rocks.
