Ulexite is a hydrated calcium and sodium borate that forms parallel and colorless fibrous crystals. Its hardness is 2.5.
It is also known as "television stone", a name given to it by the German chemist George Ludwing Ulex (1811-1883) because it has the property of "transmitting" images. If a ulexite with flattened and polished ends is placed over an image, it will function as a natural optical fiber, showing the image at the opposite end.
Ulexite is normally found in arid and desert areas.
