Lapis lazuli is a mineral composed mostly of Lazurite, Calcite and Pyrite. Lazurite is the main component of Lapis Lazuli and gives it the intense blue color, the gray or whitish veining is due to calcite and the golden traces are inclusions of pyrite. In ancient times lapis lazuli powder was used as a pigment and the Egyptians used it as a cosmetic. It belongs to the group of silicate-tectosilicates and its hardness is 5-5'5 on the Mohs scale.
