Moldavite is a green glassy mineral formed from a meteorite impact about 15 million years ago. It belongs to the tektite group, a word that comes from the Greek "tektos", which means to melt. Tektites were formed when, on impact with a meteorite, terrestrial sediments melted and were propelled into the air, where they cooled and turned into glass. When the tektite has an olive green color, it is the prized moldavite, which is considered special because of its low water content, its difficult fusibility and its chemical composition.
