Agate is a microcrystalline variety of the quartz group, a type of multi-colored chalcedony that usually has chromatic bands. There are many types of agates, their color depends on the different materials it may contain. The most abundant are grey, although we also find them in yellow, orange, white, blue, brown and pink.

As it is a porous mineral it can sometimes be dyed with vivid colors, as in the case of the fuchsia agate, the deep blue agate or the dark green one.

The agate in the natural state usually occurs in the form of inclusions within ovoid or spherical cavities of volcanic rocks. Quartz, amethyst or calcite crystallizations usually appear inside when an agate geode is opened.

Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale and can be translucent or opaque, depending on its thickness.
