The fulgurite (from Latin fulgur,'lightning') is a tube of lechatelierite( vitrifiedsilica ) that can be found in sands or sandstones and is the result of an atmospheric lightning strike.

The lightning strike on a sandy ground causes the silica grains to melt, since the temperature of this can reach 4000 degrees Celsius and up to a depth of more than one meter, but in a very narrow zone. The silica is thus vitrified in the form of lightning tubes, 2 to 50 mm in diameter, sometimes twisted or branched. These fulgurites are abundant in sand deserts and coastal dunes.
