The xylopod is a fossil wood of about 200-250 million years old, belonging to the Triassic period.
It was formed by trees that were buried underground in the sediments that accumulated.
These sediments were dominated by silica, which together with the action of water filtered, filling or replacing the cell walls of the wood. In this way the tree or wood remained a mineral mold, in which it is often possible to observe the original tissue of the plant and even the growth rings, as in the photograph of the cross section of a fossil tree trunk.
The presence of iron, copper and manganese in the water and sediments give the xylophala different shades and colors.
