MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The topaz is an aluminosilicate that was formed through emanations of fluorine that were released in the crystallization process of igneous rocks . It is usually found in pegmatites, rhyolite cavities and in hydrothermal veins. It forms well-developed crystals and is often used as a gem for jewelry making.

The name of topaz derives from the Sanskrit word "tapaz", which means "fire". Its name is also related to the ancient Topaz Island, in the Red Sea, now Zabargad Island (San Juan Island, Egypt), where it is said that the first specimens were found.

There are different colors and varieties of topaz, there is pink topaz, yellow topaz, blue topaz, brown topaz , colorless. The imperial topaz or golden topaz from Brazil is a particularly valued variety.

Deposits: Brazil, Russia, Zambia, United States, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, China, Madagascar and Namibia.
