The imperial topaz or golden topaz is a variety of especially valued topaz that has a yellow-orange color. Most golden topaz comes from Brazil, from the Minas Gerais region.

The name of topaz derives from the Sanskrit word "tapaz", which means "fire". Its name is also related to the ancient Topaz Island, in the Red Sea, now Zabargad Island (San Juan Island, Egypt), where it is said that the first specimens were found.

The topaz is an aluminosilicate that was formed through emanations of fluorine that were released in the crystallization process of igneous rocks . It is usually found in pegmatites, rhyolite cavities and in hydrothermal veins. It forms well-developed crystals and is often used as a gem for jewelry making.

Deposits: Brazil, Russia, Zambia, United States and Sri Lanka.
