MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The sunstone is a variety of oligoclase of gem quality, an abundant plagioplastic feldspar. It owes its color and brightness to the inclusions of hematite or goethite arranged in parallel. Sometimes it can contain copper instead of hematite, as in the case of Oregon sunstone.

The sunstone usually forms in granitic pegmatites, in granite and in felsic igneous rocks. Also in metamorphic rocks, forming in schists and gneiss. It is normally found in massive, granular habit and more rarely in the form of tabular crystals.

Deposits: United States, Norway, Russia, Canada, India and Australia.
