MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The bull's eye is a tiger's eye that has been heated and its color has changed from yellowish-brown to mahogany-brown. It is a variety of quartz that presents the "chatoyance" effect, vertical bands with reflections reminiscent of a cat's eye. This effect is produced by the orientation of the fibrous inclusions that the mineral contains.

In tiger's eye and bull's eye the fibers of crocidolite (blue asbestos) are altered and transformed into iron oxides, which are later replaced by silica.

Deposits: South Africa, United States, India, Mexico and Australia.
