MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The black obsidian is the most common variety of obsidian. It is a natural glass of volcanic origin that was formed by the rapid cooling of magmas rich in silicic acid. The lava solidified so quickly that the minerals did not have time to crystallize. So it is not considered a mineral but an igneous rock with high silica content and conchoidal fracture. Depending on how it is carved, the surface of obsidian can change color (dichroism).

The name of obsidian comes from the Latin "lapis obsianus", "obsidian stone", a name that derives from Obsius, a Roman man, supposedly an explorer or naturalist known, referred to by Pliny (1st century AD).

In ancient times, obsidian was highly valued thanks to its conchoidal fracture, which allows the creation of very sharp points and cutting tools. It was also used as an amulet and as ornamentation. Mesoamerican cultures polished obsidian to make mirrors, since it has a vitreous and reflective shine. Currently obsidian is used in the manufacture of jewelry and ornamentation and in the manufacture of cutting blades for surgery.

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES

The black obsidian is considered a powerful stone for personal growth. As a black stone it is used for protection and cleansing. It is also known to promote strength and healing. The black obsidian leads to the depths of the unconscious mind and stimulates the deepest fears to work.

Symbolically the obsidian represents the "mirror" to which the totality of being is reflected, with its shadow and its strength. One of its characteristic properties is to directly show those limiting and dark aspects of oneself in order to give them the opportunity to heal, release, transmute or integrate them. It can bring to light weaknesses, blocks, traumas and memories. It is advisable to use it with the accompaniment of a qualified therapist.
