MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The larimar is a blue silicate of the family of the pectolites that is found in the cavities of basaltic and igneous rock of the southeast of the Dominican Republic, where the sediments with Blue pectolites were washed out to sea by the Bahoruco River. It is the only pectolite with a light blue color, a coloration caused by the presence of calcium instead of cobalt. The rest of the pectolites can be white or brown.

It is said that the name of larimar is due to one of the natives who rediscovered the stone on the coast of the Caribbean Sea in 1974 and who combined the name of his daughter Larisa with that of the blue sea where he found the stone, forming the word "Lari-mar".

Deposits: Dominican Republic.
