MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The jasper is considered a chalcedony or opaque microcrystalline quartz. It can present different colors depending on its inclusions, and may contain up to 20% of other minerals. Sometimes it is formed together with the agate, the opal or some fossilized material.

The orbicular jasper is a variety of jasper that contains spherical inclusions of different colors. This type of jasper can receive various names depending on its shapes and colors, such as leopard jasper, the ocean jasper, the polychrome jasper or the unakite jasper.

The name of jasper comes from the Greek "iaspis", which means "stained stone". It is found in hydrothermal veins, in volcanic rocks, and in sedimentary rocks.
