MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Galena is the natural mineral form of lead sulfide. It represents the most important lead ore and one of the most abundant sulfur minerals. It crystallizes in the cubic system, usually in a combination of cubes and octahedrons. It is soft, dense, fragile and perfectly exfoliated, with an intense metallic shine and dark gray powder.

Galena forms in hydrothermal veins and is found in metamorphic rocks or in volcanic sulfide deposits.

Its name comes from the Greek "galene", which means "lead ore".

Deposits: United States, Great Britain, Russia and Spain.
