MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The spinel or spinel refers to both a mineral and a group of minerals that are metal oxides and share a crystalline structure. They usually form vitreous and hard octahedrons, and implanted twins. It is found in igneous mafic rocks, in metamorphic rocks rich in aluminum and in limestone with contact metamorphism.

Depending on the composition and the impurities it contains, there are different varieties and colors of spinel. Red spinel is usually the most valued, also called noble spinel or ruby ​​spinel, its color is due to the presence of chromium and aluminum. Blue spinel contains iron, zinc and cobalt. Black and greenish spinel contains iron and zinc.

The name of spinel comes from the Latin "spinella" which means "small thorn", in reference to the sharp peaks of the crystals.
