MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The smoky quartz is a variety of quartz in shades of brown, gray and black. When the color is black and opaque it is called morion quartz. The color is due to natural radiation in its formation process. There are also smoky quartz that have been irradiated or heated to enhance their color. Smoky quartz is more abundant than citrine quartz or the amethyst and is found almost everywhere in the world. It forms visible prismatic crystals and is often found in pegmatites, hydrothermal seams, and alpine rifts.
