MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Celestine is a strontium sulfate, although strontium can sometimes be substituted for barium. Its name comes from the Latin "coelestis" which means "celestial", referring to its light blue color. The best known matchmaker is the blue one, but there is also white, yellow, red, green and light brown matchmaker. Its crystals are tabular and have a vitreous luster. It is found in hydrothermal veins and in sedimentary rocks. The most important deposits of celestite are found in Madagascar.
