MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Calcite is the most abundant mineral within the group of carbonates. It is known for its great variety of crystal structures, forming scalenohedrons, rhombohedrons and prisms with different combinations. Most of the calcite is massive, forming part of the composition of limestone and marble. Calcite is also found in the form of stalactites, nodules and fibers, appearing in cracks and hydrothermal seams.

The calcite is usually white or translucent, although there are yellow, green, blue, brown, red, violet and black.

The calcite presents the optical property of birefringence, the light that passes through it gives a duplicate image of what is seen through it. This property is easily observable in optic calcite, also called Iceland spar.

Deposits: United States, Great Britain, Peru, Iceland, Brazil, Romania, Belgium and the Czech Republic.
