The cacoxenite forms characteristic golden yellow to orange acicular coatings. It appears in phosphate pegmatites and in deposits of limonite.
Its name was given by nineteenth-century mineralogists, derives from Greek and means "unwanted guest" or "evil foreigner", referring to the meaning of cacoxenite as a signal of unwanted phosphate in iron ore.
Deposits: England, Sweden, France, Germany, Holland and the United States.
