Also known as luvulite, it is known from 1944, but was not recognized as a mineral until 1976.
Sugilita is found in Canada, Japan, South Africa, Russia, India, and Italy. Its name comes from a Japanese petrologist named Ken-ichi Sugi, one of the discoverers of its discoverers.
It is a silicate containing lithium, potassium, sodium iron, manganese and aluminum and is sometimes found along with other minerals such as apatite, zircon and albita.
