Lapis lazuli is a mineral composed mostly of Lazurita, Calcite and Pyrite. Lazurita is the main component of Lapis lazuli and gives it the intense blue color, grey or whitish veining is due to calcite and golden traces are inclusions of pyrite. Lapis lazuli powder was formerly used as a pigment and used as cosmetics by the Egyptians. It belongs to the group of silicates-tectosilicicals and its hardness is 5-5'5 on the Mohs scale.
