Zircon

Silicates - nesosilicates

Zircon is a zirconium silicate considered one of the oldest minerals on Earth. It usually appears in reddish-brown tones, although it may also be found in yellow, orange, blue, green or completely colorless colors, depending on the impurities and trace elements present in its crystalline structure.

This mineral usually contains small amounts of uranium, thorium, lead and hafnium, which makes zircon a key piece in modern geology. Thanks to these inclusions, zircon crystals are used in radiometric dating techniques to determine the age of the oldest known terrestrial rocks.

The name zircon comes from the Arabic "zarqun" and the Persian "zargun", terms related to the meaning “golden color”. It crystallizes in the tetragonal system and usually appears in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks as small prismatic or bipyramidal crystals.

In addition to its gemological value, zircon also has industrial applications. It is used in abrasives, foundry work and refractory materials due to its high resistance and chemical stability.
