Sapphire

Oxides

Sapphire belongs to the corundum family, together with ruby. Both gems are crystalline varieties of aluminum oxide and are among the most appreciated gemstones in the world, together with diamond and emerald. The name sapphire comes from the Greek “sappheiros”, traditionally related to the color blue.

With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphire is one of the most resistant known minerals, surpassed only by diamond. This great hardness, together with its vitreous luster and transparency, makes it a highly valued gem in high-quality jewelry.

Although blue sapphire is the most famous variety, specimens exist in numerous colors such as yellow, pink, green, violet, brown or even colorless. These tones depend on the chemical elements present during its formation. Iron and titanium produce blue tones, while chromium generates pinkish or reddish nuances.

Sapphire also stands out for its pleochroism, an optical phenomenon that allows different tones to be appreciated depending on the angle from which the gem is observed. It forms in pegmatites, metamorphic rocks, gneiss, marbles and alluvial deposits, where it may appear as highly pure pebbles.

Sapphire is traditionally considered a stone of wisdom, serenity and mental clarity. In crystal therapy, it is associated with the throat chakra and the third eye, supporting conscious communication, intuition and sincere expression.

It is said to help balance the physical, emotional and spiritual planes, bringing inner calm and mental stability. It is also related to concentration, discipline and the search for truth, which is why it was historically used as a symbol of nobility, honesty and spiritual protection.

Blue sapphire is often used to enhance meditation, reduce mental stress and encourage clear and orderly thoughts. It is also attributed with energy associated with prosperity, confidence and emotional harmony.

These properties belong to the field of esoteric and energetic traditions and do not replace medical advice or professional treatment.
