Ulexite

Borates

Ulexite is a mineral from the borate group, composed of hydrated calcium and sodium borate. It usually occurs forming rounded nodular aggregates and white masses with silky luster, although it may also appear in parallel fibrous structures, colorless and vitreous in appearance.

Ulexite is popularly known as the television stone because of its optical capacity to transmit images through its natural fibers, creating a visual effect similar to optical fiber.

The name ulexite comes from the German chemist George Ludwig Ulex, associated with the study of this mineral.

It forms mainly in lake salt flats and evaporitic basins in desert regions, generated from boron-rich fluids. Important deposits are usually found in arid and saline areas.

Because of its curious optical properties and fibrous appearance, ulexite is appreciated both in mineral collecting and in decorative and educational pieces.
