Black Tourmaline

Silicates - cyclosilicates

Black tourmaline is one of the best-known and most abundant varieties within the group of tourmalines. This mineral group is made up of borosilicates of variable composition, although they all share a common crystal structure.

Among the main tourmaline species are schorl, black in color; elbaite, which can be pink, red, green or blue; and dravite, with brown tones. Black tourmaline corresponds mainly to the schorl variety and stands out for its intense black color and opaque character.

Its crystals are usually prismatic, elongated and with very marked parallel striations. These striations are one of the most characteristic features of black tourmaline and allow it to be easily recognized in its natural form.

When its crystals are hard, compact and well defined, it is usually called schorl tourmaline. However, when the crystals are less compact or contain inclusions of other minerals, it may be called cathedral tourmaline.

Black tourmaline forms in pegmatites, granites, hydrothermal veins and pneumatolytic veins. In addition to its ornamental and energetic use, tourmaline is also valued in industry for its pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties.

Black tourmaline is considered a reference stone for energetic cleansing, protection and transformation. Traditionally, it is used as a shield against dense energies, as it is said to absorb them and direct them toward the earth to be transmuted.

For this reason, it is often recommended in its natural crystallized form and placed upright, especially in spaces where one seeks to maintain a clean and balanced environment.

The properties of black tourmaline make it widely used in therapy rooms, meditation spaces, energetic consultations and places where healing work is carried out. It is also used to neutralize the energetic load of spaces with electrical devices or electromagnetic exposure.

On a personal level, it is associated with stability, grounding and emotional protection. It helps restore inner balance, brings firmness and supports processes of cleansing and transformation.

It is said that the strength of black tourmaline is related to its parallel striations, which would act as channels capable of transforming dense energies and increasing the vibration of the energy field.
