Topaz

Silicates - nesosilicates

Topaz is a fluorine and aluminum aluminosilicate that forms mainly in environments related to igneous rocks. It usually appears in pegmatites, rhyolite cavities and hydrothermal veins, where it can develop well-formed prismatic crystals.

Its hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale makes it a resistant gem highly appreciated in jewelry. It can appear in a wide variety of colors, such as colorless, blue, yellow, pink, brown or green. Among its best-known varieties are blue topaz and imperial topaz, especially valued for their golden and orange tones.

The name topaz is related to the Sanskrit word tapaz, meaning “fire”. It has also been historically linked to the ancient Island of Topazios in the Red Sea, now known as Zabargad Island.
