Stichtite

Carbonates - nitrates

Stichtite is a hydroxylated and hydrated magnesium and chromium carbonate that belongs to the hydrotalcite group. It usually contains iron impurities and stands out for its lilac, purple, pink or violet tones.

It generally occurs in massive form, in aggregates of micaceous scales or fibers, with a waxy, opaque appearance and a soft feel. Because of its low hardness, it is a delicate mineral that requires care when handled.

Stichtite appears in serpentinite rocks as an alteration product of chromite and serpentine. It was discovered in 1910 in a mine in Tasmania and is named after the miner Robert C. Sticht.
