Sodalite

Silicates - tectosilicates

Sodalite is a sodium aluminosilicate with chlorine whose chemical formula is Na4Al3Si3O12Cl. Its name refers directly to its sodium-rich composition.

This mineral belongs to the silicate group, specifically to the tectosilicates. It usually appears in compact masses, granular aggregates or amorphous forms. The formation of well-defined crystals, such as dodecahedra or octahedra, is uncommon.

Among its most recognizable features, its intense blue color stands out, although it may also appear in grey or white tones. In many pieces, light veins are observed, normally associated with other minerals, creating a characteristic contrast.

Sodalite usually forms in alkaline igneous rocks and in cracks. Because of its medium hardness and compact appearance, it is used in jewelry, ornamental pieces, cabochons and decorative objects.
