Mineralogical characteristics
Dendritic pyrolusite is the name given to crystallizations of manganese oxides in the form of black dendrites on rocks. Although this name has traditionally been given to it, it has been proven that these dendrites are not pyrolusites, but other types of manganese oxides (cryptomelanes, birnessites, todorokites).
Because of its beautiful and delicate branching silhouette, so-called dendritic pyrolusite reminds us of a plant fossil or fern, although it is actually a mineral formed by crystallizations of manganese oxides on a metamorphic rock.
