Mineralogical characteristics
Pyrolusite or soft manganese is a manganese ore mineral ranging from iron grey to dark grey, with metallic or earthy luster. It forms rare and small prismatic to tabular crystals in botryoidal, radial aggregates or earthy masses. It stains slightly.
Pyrolusite appears under high oxidation conditions in its own sedimentary deposits or as a secondary product of other manganese deposits. It is found in lakes, swamps, shallow marine environments or ocean floors.
The name pyrolusite comes from the Greek "piro", meaning "fire", and "luou", meaning "to wash", since this mineral, thanks to its oxidizing action, was used to clean glass of the colors it took on because of iron.
