Mineralogical characteristics
Onyx is a variety of agate belonging to the microcrystalline quartz group. It is mainly composed of silica (SiO₂) and is characterized by its dark color, which can range from deep black to brown or reddish, with alternating white or light bands. These parallel layers are one of the main characteristics of onyx, as they differentiate it from other varieties of chalcedony.
Onyx has volcanic origin. It forms when silica-rich water slowly filters through cracks and cavities in other rocks, depositing successive layers at low temperatures. This process generates its recognizable banded structure. The word onyx comes from the Greek “onux”, meaning “fingernail” or “claw”, possibly in reference to its hardness and intense tone.
Its hardness ranges between 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale, making it a resistant stone suitable for jewelry and decorative objects. It can be polished easily and acquire an attractive vitreous luster.
The main onyx deposits are found in India, Mexico, United States, Brazil, Russia and South Africa. Since ancient times, this stone has been used in cameos, seals and amulets because of its resistance and elegant appearance. Within the group of protective stones, onyx occupies a prominent place for its sober color and symbolism of strength.
