Tiger’s Eye

SiO2 Silicates - tectosilicates

Tiger’s eye is a variety of quartz highly valued for its silky luster and for the optical effect that distinguishes it: chatoyance, a reflection reminiscent of the movement of a cat’s eye. This visual phenomenon occurs due to the parallel orientation of ancient mineral fibers included within the quartz. When light reflects on them, a luminous band appears and moves as the stone is turned, creating its characteristic feline appearance.

To understand what tiger’s eye is, it is necessary to know its formation process. Originally, the mineral contained crocidolite fibers (blue asbestos). Over time, these fibers altered and transformed into iron oxides, responsible for the golden, yellow and brown tones of the mineral. Finally, silica replaced those fibers, preserving their fibrous structure. This process resulted in a resistant stone, with vitreous luster and a unique optical play.

The color of tiger’s eye usually varies between golden, brown and bronze, although there is also a variety called hawk’s eye, with blue tones, and another known as bull’s eye, with reddish tones. All belong to the same mineralogical group and share structural properties.

In addition to its beauty, tiger’s eye stone is valued for symbolizing vigilance, clarity and dynamism. Its combination of warm colors and parallel fibers conveys strength, protection and determination, qualities traditionally associated with this mineral since ancient times.
