Mineralogical characteristics
Hawk’s eye is a bluish-grey variety of tiger’s eye. It is a variety of quartz that displays the "chatoyance" effect, vertical bands with reflections reminiscent of a cat’s eye. This effect is produced by the orientation of the fibrous crocidolite inclusions it contains.
The bluish-grey color of hawk’s eye is due to the fact that quartz replaced crocidolite before it had transformed into iron oxide, so the mineral retains the bluish-grey color of the original asbestos.
