Mineralogical characteristics
Bull’s eye is a tiger’s eye that has been heated and whose color has changed from yellowish-brown to mahogany-brown. It is a variety of quartz that displays the "chatoyance" effect, vertical bands with reflections reminiscent of a cat’s eye. This effect is produced by the orientation of the fibrous inclusions contained in the mineral.
In tiger’s eye and bull’s eye, the fibers of crocidolite (blue asbestos) alter and transform into iron oxides, which are then replaced by silica.
