Moqui

Iron oxide

Moqui stone or moqui marble is a round brown-toned concretion formed by sandstone cemented with hematite and goethite. It is found on the cliffs and summits of the Navajo Desert sandstone formation in southeastern Utah (USA). The area where they are most abundant is Grand Staircase-Escalante National Park.

It formed during the Jurassic Period from groundwater containing iron oxides (hematite and goethite), which, as it passed through the sand, created spherical concretions. The concretions show concentric growth and contain a harder outer layer.

The Indigenous peoples of the area, formerly the Anasazi and currently the Hopi and Zuni, use them to honor their ancestors and as protection. It is considered that “female” moqui stones (round and smooth) and “male” moqui stones (disc-shaped and rough) can be distinguished.

Moqui stones are considered stones of protection, grounding and connection with Mother Earth. They stimulate vital energy and help harmonize body and mind. In a gentle way, they dissolve blockages and help release limiting emotions and thoughts. It is said that with a masculine-feminine pair of moqui stones, masculine and feminine energies are balanced. They are recommended for tiredness and fatigue.
