Mineralogical characteristics
Larimar is a blue silicate from the pectolite family, found in basaltic and igneous rock cavities in the southeast of the Dominican Republic, where sediments with blue pectolites were carried toward the sea by the Bahoruco River. It is the only pectolite with a sky-blue color, a coloration caused by the presence of calcium instead of cobalt. Other pectolites may be white or brown.
It is said that the name larimar comes from one of the natives who rediscovered the stone on the Caribbean Sea coast in 1974 and combined the name of his daughter Larisa with the blue sea where he found the stone, forming the word "Lari-mar".
