Mineralogical characteristics
Kunzite is a pink-colored variety of spodumene. It is a lithium aluminosilicate and belongs to the pyroxene group. The color of kunzite is due to the manganese it contains, and it often fades when exposed to light. Its name was given by the gemologist George Frederik Kunz in 1902.
Kunzite often displays pleochroism; when the stone is observed from different angles, different colors can be seen. It appears in tabular and radial form, in lithium-rich granites and in pegmatites.
