Jasper is an opaque variety of microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony). It may display different colors depending on its inclusions and can contain up to 20% other minerals. Sometimes it forms together with agate, opal or some fossilized material.
Landscape jasper or picture jasper is a variety of jasper that contains veined inclusions in brown, yellowish and white tones, resembling landscapes.
The name jasper comes from the Greek "iaspis".
