Mineralogical characteristics
Jasper is considered a chalcedony or opaque microcrystalline quartz. It may display different colors depending on its inclusions and can contain up to 20% other minerals. Sometimes it forms together with agate, opal or some fossilized material.
Iraí jasper is a variety of jasper that contains green, brown, red and orange inclusions.
The name jasper comes from the Greek "iaspis", meaning "spotted stone". It is found in hydrothermal veins, volcanic rocks and sedimentary rocks.
