Mineralogical characteristics
Galena is the natural mineral form of lead sulfide. It represents the most important ore of lead and one of the most abundant sulfur minerals. It crystallizes in the cubic system, generally in combinations of cubes and octahedra. It is soft, dense, brittle and has perfect cleavage, with intense metallic luster and dark grey powder.
Galena forms in hydrothermal veins and is found in metamorphic rocks or in volcanic sulfide deposits.
Its name comes from the Greek "galene", meaning "lead mineral".
