Mineralogical characteristics
Spinel refers both to a mineral and to a group of minerals that are metal oxides and share a crystal structure. They usually form vitreous and hard octahedra, as well as implanted twins. It is found in mafic igneous rocks, aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks and limestones with contact metamorphism.
Depending on its composition and the impurities it contains, there are different varieties and colors of spinel. Red spinel is usually the most valued, also called noble spinel or ruby spinel; its color is due to the presence of chromium and aluminum. Bluish spinel contains iron, zinc and cobalt. Black and greenish spinel contains iron and zinc.
The name spinel comes from the Latin "spinella", meaning "small thorn", referring to the sharp points of the crystals.
