Mineralogical characteristics
Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz in brown, grey and black tones. When the color is black and opaque, it is called morion quartz. The color is due to natural radiation during its formation process. There are also smoky quartz specimens that have been irradiated or heated to enhance their color. Smoky quartz is more abundant than citrine quartz or amethyst and is found almost all over the world. It forms visible prismatic crystals and is usually found in pegmatites, hydrothermal veins and alpine fissures.
