Chrysanthemum stone is a white stone that appears embedded in a dark matrix rock. Its name comes from the shape it presents, which resembles the chrysanthemum flower. Its composition is variable; it usually consists of celestite crystals, although these are sometimes replaced by calcite, chalcedony and dolomite. In Japan, the chrysanthemum flower is a national symbol associated with the imperial house and is used as a decorative motif.
