Celestite is a strontium sulfate, although strontium can sometimes be replaced by barium. Its name comes from the Latin "coelestis", meaning "heavenly", referring to its light blue color. The best-known celestite is blue, but celestite also occurs in white, yellow, red, green and light brown. Its crystals are tabular and have a vitreous luster. It is found in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary rocks. The most important celestite deposits are found in Madagascar.
