Mineralogical characteristics
Calcite is the most abundant mineral within the carbonate group. It is known for its wide variety of crystal structures, forming scalenohedra, rhombohedra and prisms with different combinations. Most calcite is massive, forming part of the composition of limestones and marbles. Calcite is also found as stalactites, nodules and fibers, appearing in cracks and hydrothermal veins.
Calcite is usually white or translucent, although it can also be yellow, green, blue, brown, red, violet and black.
Calcite has the optical property of birefringence: light passing through it creates a duplicated image of whatever is viewed through it. This property is easily observable in optical calcite, also called Iceland spar.

Therapeutic properties
Calcite is considered an energizing and energy-cleansing mineral. It is said to open perception and intuition, facilitating the opening of consciousness and psychic abilities. It relaxes the mind and encourages self-confidence. On a healing level, it is said to strengthen the immune system, bones and joints, and to help heal wounds and skin conditions. Calcite appears in multiple colors, and each color is usually used on its corresponding chakra.
Blue calcite is a relaxing and gentle stone. It encourages communication and expression.
Golden calcite is often used on the 3rd and 7th chakras, for expanding consciousness and supporting meditation.
Orange calcite is an energizing stone associated with the lower chakras. On a healing level, it is said to support the intestines, reproductive system and bladder.
Optical calcite or Iceland spar is a stone of cleansing and vision. It helps heal the eyes and reduce migraines.
Pink calcite has a gentle and loving energy. It encourages self-esteem and confidence. It is calming and very suitable for children.
Green calcite is considered a stone of physical and mental healing. It helps balance the mind and move through new situations.
Violet calcite, also called cobalt-calcite, is a stone that connects with joy and promotes positive thoughts. It can be used on the 6th chakra together with amethyst.
