Mineralogical characteristics
Beryl belongs to the beryllium aluminosilicates and can appear in different colors. Its best-known gem-quality varieties are: emerald (green), aquamarine (light blue), heliodor (golden yellow), morganite (pinkish), bixbite (pink) and goshenite (colorless). Beryl is used as an ore of the element beryllium. Its crystals are usually prismatic.
The name beryl comes from the Greek "bérillos", meaning "green gemstone". It is normally found in pegmatites, mica schists and pneumatolytic and hydrothermal veins.
