Azurite

Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 Carbonates

Azurite is a dark and intense blue copper carbonate. Its name comes from the Persian word “lazhward”, meaning “blue”. It forms in the oxidized zones of calcium deposits, through the action of carbonated waters on copper minerals. It is often found together with malachite or cuprite. It appears as prismatic or tabular crystals, and also in massive, stalactitic and botryoidal habit.

Azurite can slowly transform into malachite due to chemical processes and oxidation. Visually, what can be observed in this transformation is the change in color, from dark blue to dark green. Azurite powder is toxic, so inhalation or ingestion must be avoided. In the past, azurite was mined to be used as copper and also to make pigments. There are works of art from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries painted with azurite pigments.
