Amber

Mineralogical characteristics

Amber is not a mineral, but a fossilized resin from extinct trees and plants. Its origin dates back between 40 and 60 million years. Sometimes, remains of leaves, flowers, mosses, insects or bark are found inside pieces of amber. These inclusions make it a material of great scientific interest, as well as a gemstone highly valued for its natural beauty.

The most common amber color is yellow, in shades ranging from golden to brown. There are also rarer varieties such as red amber, black amber, white amber, greenish amber and blue amber. Each color has a different origin. The red color usually forms through oxidation, while bluish or greenish tones depend on light refraction.

Its composition includes succinic acid, a natural element associated with many of amber’s properties. This feature makes amber different from other gemstones and explains why it has been used throughout history both in jewelry and in therapies.

The main deposits are found in Russia and the Baltic Sea region (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland). There are also deposits in Denmark, Germany, Italy, England, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada, China and Japan.
