Mineralogical characteristics
Fire agate is a microcrystalline variety of the quartz group, belonging to the family of chalcedonies. There are many types of agate, and most are banded and named according to their colors and patterns, which result from formation processes inside cavities of solidified lava.
Fire agate owes its color and iridescence to the reddish and brown hematite inclusions it contains. These metallic iridescences give it a highly distinctive appearance within the chalcedony group and make it an especially valued variety.
